How Do You Define Good Health?
A friend of mine, a fitness fanatic, went for his regular health check up about a year ago. His doctor told him he was at the brink of health. No cancer, no cardiovascular problems, normal blood pressure, nothing in particular that would strike any cause for attention.
Just a couple of months ago, i received news from him that he had a tumor growing in his colon. It certainly came as a surprise to me, to those around him, and to him especially.
So what defines good health? Good health is neither the absence of disease nor is it the state of mental, physical, and social well-being. The answer is a rather subjective one. In my opinion, good health is an ongoing state of wellness that can be attained by having a constant supply of antioxidants, maintaining an optimal balance of acidity and alkalinity in your body, and being free from the damage of free radicals that are present everywhere in our environment.
The Root of Diseases
Most of us are not aware that the overall health of our body depends a lot on the health of the membrane of our cells. And perhaps we are also not aware that these cell membranes are bombarded by free radicals at an average of 10,000 times in our environment. Free radicals get generated by pollution, emotional stress, smoking, unhealthy diet etc. Therefore people in Singapore are turning to alkaline water for better health and drinking pure water.
Your Body’s Own Metabolism
The cellular system in the body gets exhausted by the toxic wastes caused by damage due to free radicals. The natural pH becomes of our body gets disturbed and more inclined to sickness and diseases if acidic. The normal range of pH 7.35 to pH 7.45 is strictly regulated in our bodies and if the range gets disturbed, the acidity in our body raises leading to a number of health problems. It is recommended that the average human drink between 2 and 3 litres of water a day. The human body is made of two/thirds water and without the proper replenishment we suffer from dehydration, the results of which include tiredness, migraine, muscle cramps, constipation, dry skin and irregular blood pressure.
Quality drinking water should be free of biological, chemical and physical contaminants. Below we will discuss the problems that arise from the different sources of drinking water.
The Unforeseen Dangers in Common Types of Drinking Water
We often find many different types of water being promoted for better health. Distillation is used to get distilled water where chemicals and bacteria have been removed from the water. There are other dietary chemicals like Sodium, Magnesium and Calcium that are essential for our body. Removal of these could lead to electrolyte imbalance. This is also known as dead water which cause s more harm to our health. There is growing awareness about the alkaline water benefits.
Complications of Bottled Water
More than 100 brands of bottled water were tested by the Natural Resources Defence Council or the NRDC and most of them were found to be simple tap water. Some even showed carrying dangerous levels of arsenic and bacteria. Many homes in US and other parts of the world rely on these bottled brands that might be causing more harm than good. It is time people got aware on the benefit of alkaline water for their health.
Problems With Tap Water
The level of contaminants allowed in tap water is regulated by the EPA and FDA is the USA, and in the UK by DEFRA. However the contaminants are never levelled at 0 and they can often exceed this dose when standards slip.
Water processing in itself involves the addition of chemicals such as liquefied chlorine, flurosilicic acid, aluminium sulphate, calcium hydrocide and sodium silicofluride. In general a typical batch of water contains the above and salts of radium, copper, mercury, lead, cadmium, barium, hormones, nitrates and pesticides. Whilst many are only found in small quantities, they build up over time in the body’s cells and cause disease later in life.
Problems with Reverse Osmosis Water
Another process of water purification is reverse osmosis that uses pressure to force water across a membrane. Compounds like pesticides and chlorines too pass though the membrane and therefore we cannot rely on reverse osmosis water to be completely pure. It is essential for us to realize the benefit of alkaline water for our health.
